Natural Gas Water Heaters Save You Money

More and more home owners are starting to rethink their water heating strategies because of the impact that the economy is having on just about every aspect of life. With work being scarce and new inlets of earning potentials being just as scarce, looking outside the box is becoming more difficult than many thought. Luckily however this economy is forcing people to think about their own box and where they can change things to generate money internally! One great place to look for money is in your water heater concept. If you’re using an electric central heating concept then you may be way overpaying for your hot water. Electricity is expensive and just getting more expensive so it would stand to reason that replacing your electric unit with natural gas water heaters instead would save you money.

Initially it would cost you to purchase/upgrade your electric water heater; however with the amount of money you’d save right off the bat, this new unit will quickly recoup the costs and even go beyond that to put more money back into your wallet! The benefits are the same where as the hot water is concerned. You should notice no change in that aspect, but when you start receiving your lower electric bill and low gas bill, you will definitely notice the difference. You can get units of different sizes depending on what your needs are. You don’t have to go out and get the highest tech, or most expensive unit to get a great water heater, in fact there are many out there that are very affordable that will more than do the trick. Most units last upwards of ten or more years so your investment is in the long and short run going to show substantial savings, thus earning money without having to do anything different other than purchasing the unit itself!

If you’re completely confused as to what you need to do to make this step, rest assured, there are a great many resources to help you. The web is chalked full of great websites that will both explain to you how to figure out if your current water heater would be more efficient than a new one (i.e. if you have natural gas water heaters already but think maybe there is a more efficient unit, there are ways to figure this out). There are sites that help you find the right water heater as well as helping you to understand what all is involved in the update.

Tankless Water Heaters

I recently had a few people ask about tankless water heaters, so I decided to do some research. The first place I went to was Consumer Reports. I didn’t bother going any further. The process of heating water in your house accounts for approximately 30% of your home’s energy costs (on average). Some makers of gas-fired tankless water heaters claim their products can cut your energy costs up to half over regular storage heaters. Don’t run out to buy one.

A gas tankless water heater uses high-powered burners to quickly heat water as it is running through a heat exchanger. The average savings was 22% over the gas-fired storage tank models that were tested.

This translates into an average savings of about per year, based on 2008 national energy costs. However, the tankless models cost so much more than the traditional version, and it can take up to 22 years to break even – longer than the 20-year life of many models.

Furthermore, Consumer Reports conducted an online poll of 1,200 readers which revealed wide variations in installation costs, energy savings, and satisfaction. Many of the electric models can’t deliver hot water fast enough to replace a conventional water heater. Most homeowners with electric service only don’t have the option of gas models, and would have to upgrade their electrical service in order to power a whole-house tankless model.

There are a few other issues that manufacturers have yet to resolve. They often claim that their products are able to provide an endless amount of hot water. But inconsistent water temperatures were a common complaint among the respondents polled by CR.

When you turn the faucet on, tankless models feed in some cold water to gauge how big a temperature rise is needed. If there’s cool water lingering in the pipes, you’ll receive a momentary “cold water sandwich”. And a tankless water heater’s burner might not ignite when you try to get just a trickle of hot water for, say, shaving.

Tankless hot water heaters don’t delivery hot water instantaneously either. It takes time to heat the water to the target temperature, and just like storage water heaters, any cold water in the pipes needs to be pushed out. Tankless models electric controls mean you’ll also lose hot water during a power outage.

Tankless water heaters cost 0 to 50, compared to 0 to 0 for storage tank models. Tankless models need electrical outlets for their fan and electronics, upgraded gas pipes, and a new ventilation system. This all brings the average installation costs to 00, compared with 0 for storage tank models.

During CR’s long-term testing, an indicator on the tankless model warned of scale buildup. They paid 4 to replace valves and have a plumber flush out the lines with vinegar.

Many industry experts recommend that tankless models be serviced once a year by a technician. Calcium buildup can decrease efficiency, restrict water flow, and damage tankless models. Experts suggest installing a water softener if your water hardness is above 11 grains per gallon. Ignoring this advice can shorten your warranty.

This research proved to be an eye-opener for me. I hope it helped you as well.

TANKLESS WATER HEATER AND SOLAR ENERGY: HOW TO SAVE YOUSELF EVEN MORE MONEY

Tankless hot water heaters are typically 24% – 34% more energy efficient than storage water heaters. This is because they are not in full time employment, heating a 40 – 75 gallon vat of water, as is the standard with most homes. They only kick in and heat the water when the faucet, shower, washing machine or dishwater etc is turned on. So in theory, you should see a significant saving on your utility bills. But unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. In this article I am going to tell you why you are not making a saving and how you can guarantee that you do no matter how large or small your household.

In order to keep up with the flow and water demands, storage water heaters store hot water at a temperature much higher than would be comfortable to use straight from the tank. This wasteful process means, the water is being heated up to a very high temperature, only to be cooled down again so it can be used. Coupled with the 20% standby energy losses, this is all money you are throwing away. And on top of that, you are paying to keep the hot water heated in the tank all day long, whether you are using it or not. No wonder you decided to install a tankless water heater. With its temperature control, no storage tank and only heating the water as and when it’s needed, it’s bound to save you money. Well, not necessarily.

Cold water must pass all the way through the water heater when it is called. Which means it will take slightly longer for you to receive your hot water, and you will be running more water down the drain in the meantime. No saving there.

In a single person or couple household, tankless hot water heaters are brilliant ways of saving energy. But if you have children and are not conscious of your water consumption, you may not end up saving much money a tall. People can often spend more on their monthly fuel and water bills because of their families over indulgence in the endless supply of hot water. Also, gas fuelled tankless water heaters can waste energy if the pilot light is constantly being burnt.

So, as you can see, if you are buying a tankless water heater to purely save money, you maybe in for a surprise. But this doesn’t have to be the case. There are a couple of ways you can guarantee the savings.

For preserving your energy and financial savings, a tankless hot water heater and solar energy are a match made in heaven. You can combine one of two or both solar systems.
The first is to install a solar hot water heater system, which can cost less than 0 when done as a DIY project in your own back garden. This does require a storage tank to hold the water heated naturally by the sun, but the savings you will make by pre-heating the water before it reaches your tankless hot water system will be noticeable.

It makes sense that if the tankless hot water heater has less to do, it’s going to cost you less and use less energy and the quicker you’ll have hot water running out of your faucets.

The second system is to generate your own free electricity by installing solar panels. Solar panels are straight forward to install, and again, can be done as a DIY project for 0. Even if you have a gas fuelled tankless water heater. Installing solar panels to save on your electricity bill will offset the cost of running your tankless gas hot water system.

Powering your home with solar energy can give you a 70% saving on you energy bill. And any excess electricity you produce, the electricity company is obligated by law to buy it back from you. So your local electricity company could end up paying you.

Tankless water heaters by themselves may not be the answer to your prayers, but by working with nature’s very own solar power, they can more than meet you needs and expectations.

There are various types of water heaters manufactured by various companies, but the RV water heater is an appliance manufactured for use with propane gas. They range from sizes suitable for heating 6 gallon to 10 gallon units. They operate on gas as well as with 120 Volt AC.

Rheem is one of the manufacturers who could be trusted for obtaining the ultimate result from your water heater. They are manufacturers of suburban RV water heaters that range between 3, 6, and 10 gallon capacities.

They have standard gas models for industrial standards as well as for domestic use. There are options for you to choose electric models as well that have added performance of 1,440 watt elements at campsites.

The Rheem Suburban RV water heaters are reliable and offer simple operation. The metal used in these water heaters is porcelain since heated water attacks all other metals except porcelain. By using this metal the life of the RV water heater is longer than its competitors.

The ignition options on the RV water heaters manufactured by Rheem offer simple and reliable operations where the pilot can be lit manually. When the weather is not favorable owners would prefer to have automatic models with spark ignition that electronically controls the RV water heater.

Rheem has left no stone unturned in the manufacture of water heaters for domestic purpose as well. The RV Rheem water heaters are suitable for camp houses, mobile homes, and trailers. Since it is a compact unit it is very easy to install. You can install the RV water heater wherever you have a 110 volt power supply facility.

RV’s heating effects are of high quality since it has a patented R-foam insulation process that offers superior heat retention thus making the unit more energy efficient.

The most important feature of the Rheem RV water heater is it’s over temperature protector that stops the power supply when an excess temperature is detected and an automatic thermostat keeps the water hot at the desired temperature until it is required.

On the whole the Rheem RV water heater is a fully loaded safe, economic, and versatile gadget that should be trusted and used by everyone who is looking for a similar product.

The Takagi T-K-Jr Tankless Hot Water Heater ? A Product Review

Let’s take a brief look at the T-K Jr. the smallest water heater in the Takagi line of tankless water heaters.

According to Takagi, it can meet the hot-water needs of a small home or apartment with one or two bathrooms, as well as small commercial applications.

Takagi claims it was designed to do anything a standard 40-gallon tank-type water heater can do. The T-K Jr. works with both hydronic baseboard and radiant floor heating. It has an energy efficiency rating of .81 when burning natural gas and can provide 3.8 gallons per minute with a 60 degree temperature rise. The maximum input is 140,000 Btu.

When the water heater detects a flow of at least 0.75 gallons per minute, the heater turns on. While the computer in the controls monitors the water temperature, flow rate and gas flow.

When the burners ignite, a lamp comes on telling you the tankless water heater operating normally. The internal computer controls the gas valve and controls the water flow to maintain the preset water temperature of the water at the outlet
While reading through the owner’s manual, which you can find online at Takagi’s site, I ran found the following statement:

“The unit should be checked once a year or as necessary by a licensed technician. If repairs are needed, any repairs should be done by a licensed technician. The following systems and parts should be checked at least once a year:
1. Venting system
2. Burner
3. Manual operation of the pressure relief valve to ensure correct operation.
4. Periodic cleaning of the water filter (figure above).
5. Heat exchanger. Remove the thermistor and check for a mineral coating. A mineral coating on the thermistor requires flushing the heat exchanger with a de-scaling solution. Scale build up will void your warranty and shorten the life of your water heater.”

You might have to add the cost of a yearly maintenance check to the costs of your tankless water heater, and that could reduce the savings from your tankless water heater.

Elsewhere in the Takagi site I read this:

“8. Water hardness may affect the water heater. Water heater may be damaged. The warranty will not cover damage caused by water quality.”

It’s something for you to think about if you live in a hard water area.

The Takagi T-K Jr requires a 110 Volts to operate the controls, so if there is a power failure your tankless water heater won’t be able to provide you with hot water.
The T-KJR can be used for space heating, and potable hot water heating at the same time. I think it would make a great tankless water heater for point of use applications like for a single bathroom or the kitchen.

The owner’s manual includes information on how to use the hot water heater for baseboard and for radiant heating applications and comes complete with diagrams of typical systems.

Turn your hot water plumbing green with an energy efficient Takagi tankless hot water heater.

This article can show you how to check the temperature settings on your water heater, and adjust it when you need to. Both electric and gas residential hot water heaters are explained.

What Temperature Should the Heater be Set?

It depends on your needs, but most manufacturers recommend that your water heater be set at 120 degrees to prevent accidental scalding, and to keep your energy use down. Scalding is a particular problem in any home with small children, though installing single handle faucets can also help reduce the changes of someone running water that is too hot on themselves. If you use an older dishwasher that doesn’t have a function to preheat the water, you might want to keep your hot water tank set a bit higher at 140 instead to make sure your dishes are getting sanitized.

About the Settings

Even in water, heat always rises. This means the water at the top of the tank can be significantly hotter than at the bottom, especially if the thermostat and heating element is at the bottom. The temperature isn’t a static reading. The water may cool down to 110 before a thermostat setting of 120 kicks in and starts heating. And then it may heat the water as hot as 130 before shutting off.

Check the Temperature Setting

Let your water heater sit unused for about an hour before you go to check. With a cooking or candy thermometer, read the temperature of the water coming from your faucet after letting it run for one complete minute. Fill a cup or bowl, and check the temperature.

For a Gas Water Heater

Most gas water heaters have a dial on the front to control the gas, usually marked with a range from “warm” to “hot”. The warm setting will give water that is between 90 and 110 degrees, while the hot setting will be between 140 to 150. Just turn the dial to the right place between the two extremes.

For an Electric Water Heater

Electric water heaters are a bit more complicated. Make sure the power is off, and remove the control panels for the heating elements. Move any insulation out of the way so you can see the thermostat. The screw to adjust the temperature setting usually doesn’t have a lever or knob, so you should have a flat-head screwdriver handy. If you want your water to be 120 degrees or hotter, you should set the upper thermostat to 120 and the lower one to the actual temperature you want. This is because heat rises and the lower element will do most of the heating.

Replace the insulation and the control panel cover, and turn the power back on to the water heater.

Benefits of Solar Water Heaters

Most of the hot water in American homes is supplied by traditional water heaters. As a result, most of these Americans will face the frustrations associated with a broken water heater. Hot water heater problems are to be expected with traditional units. staying with your existing unit and attending to its problems is one way to resolve a hot water heater issue. Or you can integrate eco-friendly habits and install a solar water heater.

Solar water heaters make up 90% of the Israeli hot water supply. A law, effective in 2010, mandates that all homes in Hawaii must have solar water heaters. Californian apartment complex Solara is the first of its kind to operate completely on solar power. Though slow coming, the United States is finally assimilating to the solar movement.Just like traditional water heaters, a solar hot water heater will need to be attended to. However, the advantages of solar powered water heaters are something to consider when looking to replace your existing hot water supply unit.

When homeowners think of solar energy, most think of the impact it has on the planet. Using a solar powered water heater has many “green” benefits, such as limiting pollution and energy consumption. For example, some analysts believe the CO2 emitted from residential water heaters in North America is the same as the CO2 produced by our cars. However, a benefit often overlooked is the financial gains of solar water heaters. Yes, solar water heaters cost more to install, topping out at 00. Nevertheless, they pay for themselves within 4-8 years because they essentially produce hot water energy for free, a change you will see on your monthly bill.

How to install the hot water heater in your basement differs from how you install a solar water heater. Do-it-yourself solar water heater installation methods abound. However, there are many aspects that go into a solar unit’s installation. For starters, homeowners still need an electrical or gas hookup to their solar water heater to ensure an uninterrupted flow of hot water. Solar water heaters depend on the climate in an area, causing some days to produce more hot water than others. As a result, integrated electrical heaters, or “geyser” systems for gas, are essential for successful solar water heater installation.

Solar water heaters reside on roofs to maximize the solar power they receive. This requires a different set of skills than installing a water heater in a basement. Moreover, local codes, permits, and regulations can deter the DIY homeowner. Thus, if you are not comfortable with the prospect of setting up a new water heater on your roof, contact a professional to do the job.

If your current hot water heater didn’t bite the dust just yet, find out more about water heater repair to sustain the life of your current unit. However, if you do need to replace your existing water heater, consider the benefits of “going green” and contact a licensed professional to help you make an informed decision.
