The Pros And Cons Of Gas Heating And Electrical Heating

It has become imperative for people living in UK especially cold places to go in for the heating systems to live without any problem. In the present scenario, it has become vital to look into the various heating system options that one can get installed in their homes or workplaces as the energy for the same is not as cheap today as it used to be earlier.

This should specifically be done at the time of designing something new or reconstruction or renovations. In case one does not want to face any issues with the heating system in future it is best to take the advise of a specialized heating contractor. These heating contractors can be contacted through the project leads. One has to just provide all the details of the work required apart from ones personal data right on the classified websites or the heating websites itself. The heating contractors looking into these sites will get in contact with you regarding your heating systems.

In most cases in the present day many of them are not having enough knowledge about the conservation of energy and more so with the heating. There are many trade associations that give out information on th various kinds of heating products and services.A few of the trade associations are The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Clearing House, American Public Power Association etc.

These days, with most of the people looking for economical means of heating, there are only two types of heating systems that are gaining popularity , namely:

Electrical heating system

Gas heating system

Let’s conduct a comparison to analyze which system proves to be more economical than the other one:

1. Installation: The electrical heating system is very reasonable than the gas heating system in terms of installation. There is a very less expenditure involved in the beginning of the setup of the electric heating system though one has to take care with its set up.The gas heaters actually cost at least 20% more than the electric heaters

2. Response time: The maximum time taken by the electric radiators to heat up completely is 3 minutes which is reasonably less. There is instant hot water that one can enjoy due to the ‘combi’ boiler present in the gas heaters.

3. Ease of use: Gas heating systems provide great power over maintaining the heat levels in your house or at workplace. There is no manual intervention required to keep the temperature at the correct levels and it gets adjusted automatically due to thermostat operation.Whereas in the case of the electrical heating system one has to adjust the temperature as necessary making it very time taking.

4. Environment friendly: The chief advantage of electrical system is that there is reduced risk of environmental damage with the release of carbon monoxide.Electrical heating is much safer and cleaner as there are no flames involved as in the case of gas heating. At certain occasions one may get some kind of smell with the gas system even if it is not just the most difficult ones to maintain.

Conclusion:

One of the most ideal things to do is to take the advise of a specialized person to get the best heating system for ones requirements.Cost should not be taken as the ultimate factor to decide. It is one of the most enormous and long term investment that one is making. The decision has to be taken with a view of all the factors that are associated with its functioning as well.

Garage Heater Tips And Tricks

Garages often possess additional space which can be utilized for different purposes.

Such additional space is usually used for occupying home offices, work areas just to mention a few.
Most often than not one finds out that this extension of our homes is either not insulated and when insulated, the insulation is not well done or has worn off thereby making it necessary for you to consider getting a garage heater or some other means of improving the situation that is if you are really considering make use of this place for some serious work.

Now making provision for a garage heater to warm this part of your home is good that is if you are really thinking of making use of this part of your home.
The heaters which you can make use of are available in various designs, shapes and sizes with each designed for a purpose.Propane heaters for instance are one of the commonest types of heaters that are consistently used in warming enclosures or these extensions of our homes.
This is often due to the fact that they are affordable and efficient.
These heaters depending on their size (that is of the heater and propane tank) can very well heat any fairly sized garage.
These propane heaters are nice options for providing cheap source of thermal energy for the garage and other confined areas of the house that require the provision of heat.

Most of the models you will come across are portable, thereby providing the opportunity of moving them from one spot to another spot in your work area with ease.

This propane heater is very near being indispensable as it is possible for you to make use of it as not just a garage heater, but as a heater that is versatile useful in many parts of your home.In spite of these benefits however, making use of this particular type of heater has its drawbacks or precautions that one needs to be careful with.
In this regard it is necessary for you to follow the instructions and precautions as they provided in this product’s manual.

Next is you need to realize that propane, which is definitely one of the gases used in making propane heaters is combustible and any leak or contact of this gas with flammable items can result in harm to you or others. Consequently, these heaters must be safely and well placed to prevent leakages and contact with other flammable sources.
One other thing about using a propane heater as your garage heater is that space heaters often come as two types: the infrared (radiant) and circulation space heaters. The infrared propane heater heats objects, which also heat the surrounding air, while the circulation type heater uses a fan to heat the air directly.

How Solar Water Heaters Work to Save You Money

Like the name implies, solar water heaters use energy from the sun to heat water. Initially, the cost of a solar water heater is high, but it can save you thousands of dollars in the long term. In this article, we’ll discuss the costs associated with solar water heaters, how they work and how to install them.

While solar water heaters are no longer supported by tax credits, they have become considerably more reliable, less expensive and more efficient than the popular models of the 70s and 80s.

For example, a moderate climate system that’s capable of heating water for an entire household can be installed for anywhere from 00-5000, making solar water heaters very competitive when compared to traditional electric and gas heaters.

What’s the Annual Tab?

Typically, a solar water heating system has an annual operating cost of only about . Meanwhile, a traditional gas or electric water heater will cost you 0 and more – especially those that heat up the water all night while everyone sleeps.

Essentially, solar water heaters work by serving as a preheater for a conventional storage or on-demand water heater. They even work well with on-demand water heaters that have temperature adjustability.

Because the solar system preheats the water, the extra temperature boost required by the on-demand heater is low and people who use them can get a high flow rate and lots of monthly savings.

Installation Considerations

Those of you thinking of installing a solar water heater will have at an advantage if you have a south-sloping roof. This will make installation easier and your heater will run more efficiently. Most cold-climate families use solar as a three-season system and then fall back on a traditional water heater during the dark winter months.

Before installing a solar water heating system, always look for a qualified installer and dealer who can design and size your backup system. Ask about their certifications, and request referrals from past customers. This will be a fairly expensive job, so you don’t want to be shy about insisting upon an experienced installer with positive customer feedback.

Thinking Ahead

You should also start planning now. Like most people, we don’t think about replacing our water heating system until it actually fails and hot water becomes unavailable for several hours. In fact, depending on the design of your home water pipes, the main water valve to the entire house may need to be shut off until the water heater is replaced.

Then in those unplanned emergency situations, we wind up rushing out and putting in whatever system we can get. Instead, take the time to research different solar options, find the system that fits your energy needs and plan ahead to replace your existing water heater before it fails.

Remember, most water heaters have a lifespan of about 10-15 years, so be prepared. The energy savings alone could pay for that new solar water heater by the time the year is up, and you’ll be happier knowing you’re polluting the earth just a little bit less.

Things to Look For in a Good Gas Service Provider

Finding a good gas service is half of the battle. The other half is finding one close to you who is affordable. It is also important to find one that you like and seems to be able to work with you and your schedule. There are a lot of gas services now a days that not only come out to fill your tank they also put any services in between you and them on a online account so you can always check the status of your account. For example: Some service businesses that have on-line accounts allow you to make, change and check appointment listing on-line, they also let you check out the prices per amount so you can determine the amount of gas that you need at how much you want to pay. There on-line service allows you to see how far in advance you need to make a appointment for someone to come out so, you do not run out of gas in the mean time.

It is recommended that when you are looking for a gas service that you cover the entire basis you need with one company. Ask yourself, do they have a on-line account that you can refer to at any time, are they always backed up or do they seem to have a open enough schedule that you can keep gas without running out, do they service whatever appliances that you may have that take gas. Does this company have service agreements that they will work on your gas broilers, heaters, stoves and service the gas to the house in a timely manner. One other important question you would have to ask yourself is does this company deliver or is this a service that you would have to carry a gas bottle in to have it filled.

You want a gas company who will come out and fill your gas tanks that you need filled preferably so you’re not having to drive around with the gas, nor are you having to worry about un-hooking and re-hooking your gas tanks. You would prefer that the gas company that you have coming out knows about your gas boilers, gas heaters, or gas cooking devices or your gas heater. This would be a plus because you would only have to deal with one company if you need gas or service to one of your gas accessories, this will save you a lot of time in the future. This way if you ever have a problem with any of your gas appliances your gas company is not only already familiar with all of your gas equipment but, they are able to work on it in the case that a gas problem does arise. This will give you a lot of re-assurance on the safety of the gas systems that you own. The one thing that you will like if you prefer to cook with gas is that if your electric ever goes out that you will still be able to cook. There are a lot of people who prefer using gas systems, then once they get the right gas service they are pretty much set. Finding the right gas company is definitely very important. Having the right gas company will ease you mind a lot.

If there is concern that your gas service isn’t working properly, then an annual maintenance check by a registered gas boiler service heating engineer is very important for safety and efficiency.

As homeowners install amenities that require increased hot water volume, such as luxury tubs and custom showers, the percentage of energy used to heat water will continue to rise.

In an attempt to address this significant percentage of energy consumption, DOE has developed ENERGY STAR criteria for water heaters, the last major residential appliance that the program has not addressed. According to DOE projections, Americans are expected to save approximately 0 million in utility costs while avoiding 4.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the fifth year in effect.

Five categories of residential water heaters will be eligible for Energy Star labeling – high-performance gas storage, whole-home gas tankless, advanced drop-in or integrated heat pump, solar and gas condensing. The new Energy Star criteria go into effect in 2009.

“The Energy Star program empowers consumers to make smart energy choices that will save money and energy, and reduce our carbon footprint,” said DOE Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Andy Krassner. “Expansion of the Energy Star program to include water heaters will give Americans yet another way to more efficiently use energy in their homes and, in the interest of increasing energy security and addressing climate change, help further the President’s goal of fundamentally changing the way this nation uses power.”

By leveraging the established value of the Energy Star program, DOE hopes that manufacturers will focus on developing more efficient technologies and that consumers will recognize that Energy Star water heaters will deliver similar or better performance than conventional models while using less energy and saving money. According to an April 2008 report released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Energy Star label favorably influences more than 70 percent of households, up from about 50 percent in 2003.

More than 9,000 organizations have joined Energy Star as partners committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes and businesses. The Energy Star label now appears on more than 40 kinds of consumer products. A.O. Smith, industry leader for more than 70 years, has engineered a full line of Energy Star water heaters to meet the hot-water needs of households while benefiting budgets and the environment.

Tankless Water Heater Pumps & Hot Water Circulating Systems

Generally speaking, tankless water heaters are not compatible with hot water recirc or circulating pumps due to the low flow rates on the pump side, and over-temperature problems on the heater side.

They are however compatible with hot water demand system pumps as long as the pump has enough power to create the flow needed to turn on the water heater.

By installing a hot water demand system to work with your tankless water heater you will get your hot water faster and save a lot of water at the same time. It really turns your tankless heater into a green product.

Problems with tankless water heater flow rates

Tankless water heaters require a minimum flow of water to turn on or keep the heater turned on. Drop below that flow rate and the heater shuts down. Typical minimum flow rates are 1/2 to 3/4 gallons per minute.

If you want to use one of those “luke-warm” circulating systems like the Autocirc1, RedyTemp, or Grundfos systems you are out of luck. They don’t produce enough flow to turn on the water heater, so they would not be of much use.

There are some models of tankless water heaters that can be used with traditional circulating pumps. However, it kind of defeats the purpose of the tankless water heater since you will use substantially more energy with this type of recirc system than without it. You will save water though.

Potential shower problems with incorrectly sized tankless water heaters

If your tankless water heater is sized too large or too small you may suffer temperature control problems taking showers and the like. The temperature of the shower is controlled by the ratio of hot water to cold water produced by the mixing valve.

If you want hotter water then you adjust the valve for more hot and less cold water. If your heater is already putting out the most hot water it can, then increasing the flow will simply lower the temperature since the heater won’t be able to keep up. This is more of a problem with electric heaters than gas because electric units tend to have a lower maximum capacity than gas heaters.

On the other hand, if you want a lower temperature, and you adjust the valve accordingly by reducing the amount of hot water and increasing the cold. But if that results in a hot water flow rate lower than the minimum required by the heater, it shuts off.

You aren’t aware of the change until a minute later when the cold water hits you. You immediately re-adjust for warmer water and in a minute or so it finally arrives. This is known as the cold water “sandwich” in the water heater industry.

So it’s very important to get the correct size tankless water heater, not to big and not too small.

Hot water demand systems save water and energy

Since hot water demand systems do not run continuously, only for a few seconds to get the hot water to the fixture, they work fine with tankless water heaters, as long as they can produce the required minimum flow rate. Some models will and some won’t.

A demand type hot water pump only pumps water from the heater to the fixture when you “demand” it by pressing the start button. When the hot water reaches the pump it shuts off. At that point the hot water piping from the heater to the fixture is full of hot water, and you can turn on the faucet to receive nearly instant hot water.

Typically hot water demand pumps can pump water at twice the rate of most low-flow fixtures found in today’s homes.

You save energy with your tankless water heater and you save water with the demand pump and you save money from both, while adding convenience for yourself.

Be green, help reduce your carbon footprint, and install a demand pump on your tankless water heater today!

Some Instructional Hints and Tips For Replacing and Repairing Water Heaters

Water heaters are very essential for every home. However, replacing a water heater can be a troublesome job. Here are some handy tips for replacing water heater.

Essentially, the job of replacing water heating device should be done with the help of a professional plumber. However, if you think that calling a plumber would be an expensive option and you want to do it yourself, you can give it a try yourself. All you need to do is use the web to find out how others try this job on their own. Get the right set of instructions and follow it to the last letter.

To know how to replace water heating device will be useful only if you know when you should replace the water heater. This is a confusing point and can befuddle even the most clear headed individual.

You must consider its age. While gas heaters work anywhere between 8-12 years, electric ones between 10-15 years, and tankless heaters have a longer life expectancy.

Once this period is covered, you know it is time to replace the heater. Similarly, if you start getting rust colored hot water or cold water, then it replacement of the heater is overdue.

Before you start replacing water heater, you need to ensure that you have all the necessary tools like hacksaw, screwdrivers and other basic tools. Then next thing you need to do is turn off the electricity or gas supply and water supply to the water heating device. It is then time to drain the heater by letting the air out of the heater. Remove the wiring gradually. If the pipes to water supply cannot be removed manually, you need to cut them with the help of a hacksaw. However, you need to replace them with new pipes once you cut them out of the heater.

Move new water heating device into position and match the plumbing locations with the existing one. Next, fix the plumbing lines. In case the inlet and outlet system of new water heater do not match with the old one, try flexible copper supply lines.

Connect fuel source, that is, the gas or electricity line as per the type of heater. Turn on the supply and see if there are any leakages. Attach specific parts as given in the instructions booklet. Turn on the water supply and you are ready to use the water heating device all over again.

Free Solar Hot Water Heaters

The news is out. Residential solar water heating systems now cost between ,500 and ,500 – compared to 0 to 0 for electric and gas heaters. Solar hot water systems are still significantly more expensive initially… So how is that FREE?

With energy prices soaring, considering the savings in electricity or natural gas, experts report that solar water heaters now pay for themselves within 4-8 years!

Solar water heating systems last 15 to 30 years – at least twice as long as conventional systems. With this in mind, after the initial payback period, you can enjoy free hot water for 10 to 20 years!

Of course, the best reason to install a solar water heater is the positive impact on the environment – no fossil fuels or nuclear used to generate the energy to provide your home with hot water – only pure energy provided by the sun.

Conventional Water Heaters Contribute to Global Warming

Consider this: according to the University of Wisconsin’s Solar Energy Laboratory, an average four-person household with an electric water heater needs about 6,400 kilowatt hours of electricity per year to heat water for their home.

Assuming electricity is generated by a typical power plant with an efficiency of around 30 percent; this means the average electric water heater is responsible for about 8 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, a significant contributor to CO2 pollution – and global warming.

Let’s put this into perspective. The average car emits about 4 tons of CO2 annually … so this means electric hot water heaters generate about twice as much CO2 as the average automobile – every year!

So, for every solar hot water system installed, the effect is like taking two cars off the road for the life of the solar heating system. Imagine if just 25 % of U.S. homes installed solar hot water systems … the drop in C02 emissions would be staggering.

So, what’s not to like? Financial savings, tax credits, clean energy, saving the planet … sounds like a winning move to me.

How They Work

Solar hot water systems can be implemented as either active or passive systems.

Active Systems

Active solar water heaters generally use electrically powered pumps and other equipment to circulate water or a ‘heat-transfer fluid’ through the system. There are three types of active systems:

1. Direct systems — these systems use pumps to circulate water through special solar heat collectors. Best suited for mild climates.

2. Indirect system — instead of pumping water through the solar collectors, these systems pump ‘heat-transfer fluids’, such as antifreeze fluid. Heat exchangers then transfer the heat from the fluid to the water. Better for colder climates.

3. Drainback systems — also use electric pumps to circulate water through the solar heat collectors. In this type of indirect heating system, the heated water drains into a holdintank when the pumps stop.

Both the indirect and the drainback systems work well in colder climates because they minimize the chance of freezing water by constantly circulating the water or fluid.

Passive Systems

Passive solar water heaters circulate water or a heat-transfer fluid without electric pumps or other devices. There are two basic types of passive solar water heating systems:

1. Batch heaters are very simple and have been used for years. They consist of one or more storage tanks placed in insulated boxes with their painted, or heat-absorbing sides facing the sun. Since water flow is minimal, these systems work best in warmer climates.

2. Thermosiphon systems — these systems rely on the natural process that causes warm water to rise. The system circulates water through solar heat collectors and then into a holding tank, which is located above the collector.

Thermosiphon systems can function effectively in colder climates due to the constant circulation of system fluids.

Solar Water Heaters Gaining Popularity

Reaching the point where 50% of all U.S. households have some type of solar hot water system installed might not be such an outrageous goal. According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), there are 1.5 million solar water heaters already in use in U.S. homes and businesses. Since Solar water heater systems can work effectively in just about any climate, it’s estimated that 40 percent of all U.S. homes have sufficient access to sunlight to make it cost effective for them to install solar water heaters right now.

Go Green!

Using the sun to heat water is not a new idea. Solar energy has been used for years to heat water for homes and businesses around the world. In some countries, such as Israel, solar hot water systems are now mandatory for residential use. In the U.S., as far back as the early 1900’s, solar hot water systems have been common in southern California.

Today, solar heated water systems provide hot water for everything from remote cabins and homes to hospitals and office buildings.

The more we embrace new technologies that promote eco-friendly solutions for energy production and reduce CO2 emissions, the better chance we have of leaving a planet to our children that not only survives, but thrives.

Go Green! Look into installing a solar hot water heater today.

How do you choose the right kind of heater?

Effective Ways of Choosing the Best Heater for your Home

Generating heat inside your house especially when winter season comes is a vital necessity for most households. Hence, it is also very important that they get to know the different components, types and purposes of heaters to get the most out of their investment. Heaters are available in the market with increasingly growing variety and style. Hence, knowing what they are and how they can benefit you is essential to know which one you need the most.

The very first thing to do when looking for a heater is to know what it is and how it really works. You need to determine its type, what it is made of and how it functions or operate to compare it with others and make as basis for your purchase. Amongst the wide array of heat generating equipment in the market, there are only two main types of heater which you must basically familiarize with.

Heaters that are electrically operated. Electric types are the most commonly used when it comes to heat generation particularly for indoor purposes. This is very convenient when used and is much safer than all its other natural counterparts. Aside from the fact that you will be using electricity sources to make it work, it does not emit carbon monoxide, a harmful gas that is threatening to your health. Furthermore, electric kinds of heater are safer to use because it is not prone to dangers of explosion and the like. Under this category however are different other subcategories or groups. Electric gadgets for heat are divided into two namely convection and radiant heaters. The former is a type that generates heat and makes sure that warm air is disseminated throughout the room. It is also very practical to use because you can heat the entire room regardless of its size. The latter is considered the oldest type of heater which has a significant difference with its convection counterpart. Radiant types heat a certain object but do not have the capacity to provide warm air in the room. For instance, it can only heat the floor, which is your main source of warmth, and not the temperature around you. Heaters which are non electric. Natural heaters are the next type of heat generating gadgets. Unlike electric ones, this type is ideal for outdoor use such as heating your patios and porches. The good thing about this type is that it is practically convenient because you will not be using any electricity to keep it functioning. Examples of this kind are kerosene, wood burning space and natural gas heaters. Kerosene or paraffin types are the ones you use for supplemental heat and ideal in cases of power interruption because no electricity is required to operate the equipment. Natural gas uses LPG to operate the system and wood burning as its name implies utilize woods to provide heat.\

Home heaters are essential and must be chosen with utmost care and attention because you will definitely need it to function well during extremely cold seasons.
